The Effect of Channel Variations on Optimal Download Policies in SVC video delivery with buffer restrictions

چکیده
In this work, we address the problem of scalable video delivery to mobile users under varying buffering constraints on the user side to determine how channel variations affect the optimal delivery policy. Typically, buffering constraints dictate how much video data the consumer may cache on a local disk ahead of the playback instant, and have a marked impact on the optimal policy for retrieving content. Using a semi-Markov decision process (SMDP) we determine optimal video delivery policies for different levels of buffer limits in different wireless environments for a single user scenario. The outcome of the SMDP shows how the optimal download policy depends on the buffer constraints and the temporal correlation of the wireless channel. We apply a decision tree classifier to the output of the SMDP to derive simple approximate policies for different scenarios. The results indicate that the occupancy of the download buffer is in general more important in the decision making than the current state of the wireless channel. Furthermore, we show that the optimal policy is more conservative in slowly varying, and more greedy in fast changing channels.

Priority-based transmission scheduling for delivery of scalable video coding over mobile channels
The media, especially the video delivery over mobile channels may be affected by link outages and transmission bit rate variations due to the actual channel condition and the used wireless interface. In this paper we present the use of Priority-based Transmission Scheduling of SVC media data to overcome link outages and reduction in channel bit rate in mobile networks. The Priority-based Transm...
متن کاملRestless Video Bandits: Optimal SVC Streaming in a Multi-user Wireless Network
In this paper, we address the problem of scheduling scalable video to video streaming users in a wireless network. While significant amount of research has focused on optimal quality adaptation policies for Scalable Video Coding (SVC), little has been done on scheduling SVC users in a multi-user environment. We model the scheduling as a Restless Bandit problem and then formulate it as a linear ...

The explosion of mobile video traffic imposes tremendous challenges on present cellular networks. To alleviate the pressure on backhaul links and to enhance the quality of experience (QoE) of video streaming service, small cell base stations (SBS) with caching ability are introduced to assist the content delivery. In this paper, we present the first study on the optimal caching strategy of scal...
